BBCE Summer School 2026 on “Scientific writing and presenting”

A 5-days Summer School on “Scientific Writing and presenting” will be organized by Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Zoya Hadzhieva and Marcela Arango Ospina, Institute of Biomaterials, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) on 26-30 October 2026. The Summer School will be held on site in the Institute of Biomaterials in Erlangen.

The event will start with workshops on scientific writing, specifically the participants will learn to identify their research story and to communicate it clearly, effectively and precisely. The course will also address the role of AI tools in scientific writing, providing practical guidance on their effective and responsible use across different stages of the writing process. Moreover, a workshop on presenting strategies will be offered providing the participants tools to have an effective and powerful communication during oral talks. The last part of the writing school will be on the concept and design of academic posters.

Martina Michalikova 

Dr. Martina Michalikova is a biologist and computational neuroscientist who obtained her doctoral title in 2016 from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She is also a certified writing consultant specialized in scientific writing in English as a second language. Since 2017 she has been giving workshops, leading writing groups, and providing individual writing support as a coach & consultant.

Peter Hull

Peter is the English Coordinator for the Natural Sciences Faculty at the FAU, leads the scientific English program at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and is an active member of the Erlangen Center for Literature and Natural Science. His research focuses on cognitive linguistics and didactics in relation to physics.





Irem Unalan

Dr. Irem Unalan is a postdoctoral researcher and habilitation candidate at the Institute of Biomaterials, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. Her research focuses on the development of bioinspired and bioinstructive biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with particular emphasis on wound healing, bone regeneration and neural tissue engineering. Her work combines advanced biofabrication approaches, particularly melt electrowriting (MEW), with hydrogels, 3D bioprinting, and electrospinning to create hierarchical and multifunctional scaffolds with controlled microarchitectures. By combining different fabrication approaches with functional biomaterials, her research aims to develop biomimetic microenvironments that provide structural and biological cues to guide cell behavior and support tissue regeneration.

All invited participants should submit an abstract of maximum 200 words for a poster presentation on their scientific work before 12th October 2026, by using the attached template: BBCE_Template_Abstract Summer School 2026.docx

A book of abstracts with all the submitted contributions will be published on the BBCE website.

BBCE project´s main objective is to establish a joint Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence for advanced biomaterials development based on the long-term strategic cooperation between AO Research Institute Davos, Switzerland (ARI) and Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany (FAU) on the one hand and RTU RBIDC, LIOS, RSU and RSU IS on the other hand.
