Riga Technical University, Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials innovations and development centre

Riga Technical University (RTU) is one of the oldest institutions of higher technical education in Eastern Europe. Research team at RTU Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials innovations and development centre (RTU RBIDC) consists of chemical engineers and materials scientists. The biomaterials developed at RTU RBIDC have been tested in clinical practice in cooperation with clinicians from Riga Stradins University (Latvia) for more than 15 years and in more than 400 patient cases. Additional research fields include drug delivery systems and nanostructured implant composites with drug eluting properties. Currently research team includes 15 early stage researchers and PhD students with background in chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science. The team has experience in several local and international projects, like H2020, ERDF, EURONANOMED and ERA-NET projects, where the cooperation with industrial partners occurs. In last 5 years scientific results have been presented in more than 70 scientific papers indexed in Scopus and presented in many international conferences.

BBCE project´s main objective is to establish a joint Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence for advanced biomaterials development based on the long-term strategic cooperation between AO Research Institute Davos, Switzerland (ARI) and Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany (FAU) on the one hand and RTU RBIDC, LIOS, RSU and RSU IS on the other hand.
